I use 3 ext Hard Drives set up in various formats for storage, back up and speedy streaming. Great for greenscreening and multicam hd video editing with FCP It is expensive, but good value for money if you can afford it IMHO. If you don't recognize the headline, it's from A Space Odyssey, when the space monolith "opens up" in front of astronaut David Bowman and the stargate is revealed.
It's also what I said when I unboxed my new Mac Pro. The extruded, polished, and anodized aluminum cover is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever owned.
Mac Pro 3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5(MD878X/A)
It's certainly the best looking bit of computer equipment you're likely to ever see. I'm still trying to figure out how something so perfectly mirrored can also be almost as perfectly fingerprint-proof, but it is. As the father of two small boys who can't resist touching everything, I'm grateful. My two most-demanding applications are Aperture and Handbrake, and this stock six-core Mac Pro is plenty fast for both.
I'm never stuck waiting for a process to finish; I make the adjustment and the photo is adjusted. Handbrake would rip my videos faster if I threw a couple more CPU cores at it, but not for a price that makes any sense. I'd recommend any of LaCie's fine external Thunderbolt drives. But I find I'd rather have that gorgeous jet engine-looking thing on top of my desktop, than some big metal or plastic box underneath my desk. It's gorgeous, but never distracting. It's so silent, only the glow of your monitor will let you know when it's on.
I'm sure the fan must be spinning in there somewhere, or Handbrake would have fried the CPU by now -- but you couldn't get me to swear to that. Everyone will want to touch it. Let them. What I like best about it though isn't the speed or the looks -- it's that it's a Mac, and the best Mac that Apple has ever built. Yes, it's expensive, but with exactly ONE moving part the fan does move, or so I'm told , it ought to last forever. And the resale value will hold up nicely, too. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to staring into my new Mac Pro, waiting for the Star Child to emerge.
I have the core Mac pro at work and for most things this is quite a bit faster than that. No complaints there. However, finding internal storage upgrades, interfacing it with my dvd-d dual link monitor, transferring my hard drives etc has proved to be quite an expensive odyssey. I like the the speed, but I would have preferred a design closer to the previous tower much better and would have made it possible to transfer my old hardware with a minimum of expense.
This may have saved apple a few bucks in construction costs, but it costs their customers thousands of dollars, not to mention endless hours trying to solve problems that really shouldn't be a problem. I thought I was done getting expensive external add-ons when they introduced the Mac II back in the s, but unfortunately it seems they have gone back to their impractical roots. Great computer, just what we needed for some high end video work. Amazon had them in stock when no one else did and I got next day delivery.
I purchased mine directly through Apple. Waited for 2 months My spec is 3. A little bit about what I do. I'm going to explain how this computer has changed my workflow. Software I use on an everyday basis: All I can say is the difference coming from these machines is like day and night. The reason I pick this configuration: It's a good sweet spot for what I do.
I feel like this is a good start, and 32GB feels enough for me. So far I have zero page outs This is also something that might go down in price later on. This is one of the fastest things on the mac pro. When I'm finish with the project, I can move the files to external and start the next project. This is a no brainer for video editors. Adobe Creative Suite has recently updated the software to optimize the performance of the mac pro.
I no longer need to render previews on my timeline. Premiere pro now can run full p without drop frame with adding live scaling, rotation, color correction, all other filters, and changing playback speed. When exporting final output video I am getting a very close to 1: A 2-minute fast cut video only takes about 2 minutes to export. A minute video with simple color correction only takes about 18 minutes to export. I have a one-hour long timeline project coming up and I would like to see how it performs. Exporting a 1 and a half hour timeline with audio and color adjustment in all clips.
It took me just about 1 hour and 50 minutes to export. Photoshop and Lightroom are a little different. When doing batch export CR2 to full size jpg with Lightroom 5, the software only uses one thread per core. To max the performance on the CPU cores, you have to run multiple project tasks on Lightroom the same time. After working multiple images about 50 or so with a lot of copying layers I get a high inactive memory usage, not wired. Everyday Tasks: The reason one card is higher than the other I think is because one GPU is dedicated to push my monitors.
This works great as the Ethernet transfer speed is pretty fast. The fan is quiet, from RPM from every day to exporting video. Max rpm is at rpm activate manually and yes by then you can hear the fan. Coming from my old Macs it's a no brainer this mac pro is faster and more stable. It sped up my workflow, as I no longer need to render previews prior my edits. Its also future proofing as 4K is just around the corner. Exporting and adjusting in Lightroom is lighting fast. This is a perfect computer for the content creators. See all 38 reviews.
